4–8 Mesh Coconut Shell Activated Carbon (900–1000 Iodine Value) is a premium-quality granular activated carbon (GAC) manufactured from carefully selected natural coconut shells using a controlled steam activation process. Designed for superior adsorption performance, it effectively removes chlorine, unpleasant taste, odour, dissolved organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, colour, and other impurities from municipal, commercial, and industrial water supplies.

With an iodine value ranging from 900 to 1000 mg/g, this activated carbon offers an excellent balance of adsorption capacity, durability, and service life. Its highly developed microporous structure efficiently captures low molecular weight contaminants commonly found in drinking water, while its exceptional hardness minimizes media loss during repeated backwashing.

Derived from renewable coconut shells, this environmentally friendly filtration media is widely used in activated carbon filters, RO pretreatment systems, drinking water plants, food processing industries, pharmaceutical applications, and various industrial water treatment systems.

🔧 Installation & Operating Guidelines

  1. Install the activated carbon over a properly graded support gravel bed.
  2. Thoroughly backwash the media before placing the filter into service to remove fine particles and properly classify the media bed.
  3. Maintain adequate freeboard to allow proper bed expansion during backwashing.
  4. Operate within the recommended service flow rate to achieve optimum contact time and adsorption efficiency.
  5. Perform regular backwashing to remove trapped suspended solids and prevent media channeling.
  6. Monitor chlorine breakthrough and treated water quality to determine the appropriate replacement interval.
  7. Replace or thermally reactivate the activated carbon once adsorption capacity has been exhausted.

⚙️ How It Works

Activated carbon purifies water through the process of adsorption. As water flows through the carbon bed, dissolved contaminants are attracted to and retained within millions of microscopic pores present on the carbon surface. Coconut shell activated carbon possesses a highly developed microporous structure, making it particularly effective for removing chlorine, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, taste, odour, colour, and other dissolved organic impurities.

The 4–8 mesh particle size provides an excellent balance between adsorption efficiency, hydraulic performance, and low pressure drop, making it ideal for larger industrial and commercial filtration systems.

🥽 Safety & Handling

  • Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.
  • Keep bags tightly sealed until use to prevent moisture absorption.
  • Protect the media from contamination during storage and handling.
  • Wear gloves, safety glasses, and a dust mask while handling dry media.
  • Flush thoroughly before using for potable water applications.
  • Dispose of exhausted activated carbon according to local environmental regulations, especially if it has adsorbed hazardous contaminants.

⚠️ Limitations and Precautions

  • Activated carbon removes dissolved contaminants through adsorption but does not remove dissolved salts, hardness, or microorganisms.
  • High levels of suspended solids can reduce adsorption efficiency; adequate pretreatment is recommended where turbidity is high.
  • Free oil, grease, and heavy fouling contaminants should be removed before the activated carbon filter.
  • Adsorption capacity is finite; exhausted media must be replaced or thermally regenerated.
  • Performance depends on contact time, flow rate, contaminant concentration, and operating conditions.
  • Long periods of stagnant water may promote microbial growth within the carbon bed; regular operation and maintenance are recommended.
  • Proper backwashing is essential to maintain filtration efficiency, minimize pressure drop, and maximize media life.
