Birm Media is a high-performance catalytic filtration media specifically designed for the efficient removal of dissolved iron and manganese from groundwater. It acts as an insoluble catalyst, accelerating the oxidation of dissolved ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) and manganese into insoluble particles that are subsequently retained within the filter bed.
Unlike many conventional iron removal media, Birm does not require chemical regeneration, making it a cost-effective and low-maintenance solution for residential, commercial, and industrial water treatment systems. With proper operating conditions, Birm offers excellent filtration performance, long service life, and simple regeneration through periodic water backwashing.

🔧 Installation & Operating Guidelines
- Install Birm over a properly graded support gravel bed inside a pressure filter vessel.
- Backwash the media thoroughly before commissioning to remove fine particles and properly classify the bed.
- Ensure sufficient dissolved oxygen is available in the influent water for effective oxidation.
- Maintain the recommended service flow rate according to vessel size and application.
- Perform regular backwashing to remove accumulated iron and manganese deposits.
- If dissolved oxygen is insufficient, provide aeration before the Birm filter.
- Inspect media periodically and replace when catalytic activity significantly decreases.
⚙️ How It Works
Birm functions as a catalytic oxidation media. As groundwater passes through the filter bed, dissolved ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) and manganese are rapidly oxidized into insoluble ferric iron and manganese oxides using the dissolved oxygen naturally present in the water.
These oxidized particles become trapped within the media bed while clean water flows through the filter. Periodic backwashing removes the accumulated deposits, restoring the media's filtration capacity. Since Birm itself is not consumed during the process, it provides long service life without requiring chemical regeneration under suitable water conditions.
🥽 Safety & Handling
- Store in a dry, covered area away from contamination.
- Keep packaging sealed until installation.
- Avoid mixing with chemicals unless recommended for the treatment system.
- Wear gloves, safety glasses, and a dust mask while handling dry media.
- Backwash thoroughly before placing the filter into service.
- Dispose of spent media in accordance with local environmental regulations.

⚠️ Limitations and Precautions
- Birm requires adequate dissolved oxygen for effective iron and manganese oxidation.
- Free chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, oil, and excessive organic matter may reduce media performance.
- Water pH should generally be above 6.8 for iron removal and 8.0 or higher for effective manganese removal.
- Not suitable where chemical oxidants remain in the influent unless specifically designed for the application.
- High suspended solids should be removed before the Birm filter to prevent premature fouling.
- Regular backwashing is essential to maintain filtration efficiency and prevent pressure drop.
- Water chemistry should be evaluated before selecting Birm to ensure suitability for the application.
