- Install the selected MnO₂ media in a properly designed pressure filter vessel.
- Provide an appropriate underdrain and graded support gravel layer below the media.
- Wash and backwash the media thoroughly before placing the system into service.
- Ensure adequate oxidation conditions are available in the feed water. Aeration or another suitable oxidation step may be required depending on raw water chemistry and media grade.
- Maintain the operating pH recommended for the selected MnO₂ media and target contaminant.
- Operate within the recommended service flow rate to provide sufficient contact time.
- Perform regular backwashing to remove accumulated iron and manganese oxides.

During normal filtration, treated water passes through the media while the precipitated contaminants remain trapped. As the filter accumulates these deposits, pressure drop increases. Backwashing then expands and cleans the media bed, flushing the accumulated solids out of the vessel and restoring filtration capacity.
