Green Sand Filter Media is a specially processed filtration media designed for the removal of dissolved iron and manganese from groundwater and borewell water. It provides a catalytic surface that promotes the oxidation of dissolved iron and manganese into insoluble particles, which are subsequently trapped within the filter bed and removed during backwashing.

Green Sand is commonly used in iron and manganese removal filters where conventional sand filtration is not sufficient. With proper water chemistry, oxidation conditions, and regular backwashing, it provides an economical and reliable solution for groundwater treatment and pretreatment of downstream systems such as RO plants, softeners, and ion exchange units.

💧 Key Benefits

  • Efficient iron removal: Promotes oxidation of dissolved ferrous iron into insoluble ferric particles that can be filtered from the water.
  • Manganese removal: Helps oxidize and retain dissolved manganese under suitable pH and oxidation conditions.
  • Catalytic filtration: Provides a reactive surface that improves removal compared with conventional inert filter sand.
  • Improves water quality: Reduces reddish-brown staining, black manganese staining, metallic taste, and discoloration.
  • Protects downstream equipment: Reduces iron and manganese fouling of RO membranes, softeners, ion exchange resins, pipelines, and other equipment.
  • Reusable media: Can be cleaned through backwashing and, depending on the grade, regenerated using an appropriate oxidizing solution.
  • Suitable for pressure filters: Can be installed in FRP, MS, or SS filtration vessels.
  • Economical operation: Provides a practical solution for continuous iron and manganese treatment when correctly selected and operated.

🔧 Installation & Operating Guidelines

  1. Install the Green Sand media in a properly designed pressure filter vessel.
  2. Provide a suitable graded support gravel layer below the media.
  3. Wash and backwash the media thoroughly before initial commissioning.
  4. Ensure that the raw water has suitable pH and oxidation conditions for the selected media grade.
  5. Where natural dissolved oxygen is insufficient, an appropriate aeration or oxidation stage may be required.
  6. Maintain the recommended service flow rate to provide adequate contact time.
  7. Backwash regularly to remove accumulated iron and manganese precipitates.
  8. Follow the regeneration procedure recommended for the particular Green Sand grade where chemical regeneration is required.
  9. Monitor inlet and outlet iron and manganese concentrations to determine treatment performance and regeneration frequency.

⚙️ How It Works

Green Sand works through a combination of catalytic oxidation and mechanical filtration.

As groundwater passes through the media bed, dissolved ferrous iron and manganese come into contact with the reactive media surface. Under suitable oxidation conditions, these dissolved contaminants are converted into insoluble iron and manganese oxides.

The resulting particles are retained within the filter bed while treated water passes through. As the media accumulates precipitated contaminants, backwashing removes the trapped solids and restores hydraulic capacity. Depending on the specific Green Sand grade, periodic chemical regeneration may also be used to restore its oxidative capacity.

🥽 Safety & Handling

  • Store the media in a clean, dry, covered area.
  • Keep bags sealed until installation.
  • Protect the media from contamination with oil, grease, or other chemicals.
  • Wear gloves, safety glasses, and an appropriate dust mask when handling dry media.
  • Minimize dust generation during loading and unloading.
  • Wash the media thoroughly before commissioning.
  • If chemical regeneration is used, handle the regeneration chemicals according to their respective safety requirements.
  • Dispose of spent media and regeneration waste according to applicable local regulations.

⚠️ Limitations and Precautions

  • Performance depends strongly on pH, dissolved oxygen, iron and manganese concentration, alkalinity, flow rate, and competing contaminants.
  • Different Green Sand grades can have different regeneration and operating requirements.
  • Adequate oxidation conditions are essential for effective iron and manganese removal.
  • High suspended solids, oil, grease, and organic contamination can cause media fouling and should be addressed through pretreatment.
  • Very high iron or manganese concentrations may require aeration, chemical oxidation, clarification, or staged treatment before the Green Sand filter.
  • Regular backwashing is essential to prevent excessive pressure drop and maintain media performance.
  • Green Sand does not remove dissolved salts, hardness, fluoride, or unrelated dissolved contaminants.
  • A raw water analysis should be carried out before selecting the media grade and designing the filtration system.
